Boyd, Harry Benton

Harry Benton Boyd, 93, of Narrows, passed away on Monday, November 14, 2011, at Riverview Nursing and Rehabilitation in Rich Creek. He was born in Russell County, Va., on May 4, 1918, and was the son of the late Samuel Jerry and Mary Columbia Cox Boyd. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters, Roy David Boyd, Margaret Kate Rector Boyd Sword, Percy Ellis Boyd and Sallie Ellen Boyd Puckett. Benton was a World War II veteran of the United States Army, serving with the 63rd Infantry Division and the 518th, Military Police Battalion. He received the Good Conduct Medal; European-African Middle Eastern Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He was a retired employee of Appalachian Power in Pearisburg with over 30 years service. He was a longtime member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Narrows where he was a member of the Christian Men’s Fellowship and the men’s Sunday School class. A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, he will be dearly missed by his family and all who knew him. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of over 60 years, Irene Gautier Boyd; a son, Michael Boyd, of Narrows; two granddaughters, Sarah Boyd and Jessica Boyd, both of Salem, Va.; two nieces, Jo Osborne and Doris Rymer; and a nephew, Raymond Boyd. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 17, 2011, in the chapel of Riffe’s Funeral Service in Narrows with the Rev. Dennis W. Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Narrows. The family will receive friends at Riffe’s Funeral Chapel on Thursday from noon until just prior to the service.
