Mrs. Velma Wells Royal Bowman, 95, of New Windsor, Md., formerly of Montgomery County, Va., died on Monday, December 20, 2010, at Carroll Hospital Center, Westminster. Born on January 6, 1915, in Blacksburg, Va., she was the daughter of the late Abraham Rufus and Dossie Roberta Barton Wells. Twice married, her first husband was James Wallace Royal who died in 1948 and her second husband was Cletus I. Bowman who died in 1990. Mrs. Bowman was a member of the Union Bridge Church of the Brethren where she had been active with the quilting group, served as a deacon and was a former Sunday school teacher. She was formerly employed for 14 years with the Brethren Service Center in the gift shop and retired in 1980. She enjoyed sewing, painting and handicrafts. Surviving are two daughters, Jeannie Royal Laudermilch and husband, John, of New Windsor, and Ann O’Connell and husband, Jim, of Ellicott City, Md.; a son, Oliver A. Bowman and wife, Sue, of Framingham, Mass; daughterin-law, Sue Royal, of Jonesville, Va.; former daughter-in-law, Bonnie Quesenberry Royal, of Clearwater, Fla.; brother-inlaw, Dr. Loren Bowman, of La Verne, Calif.; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Ronald L. Royal in 2007; granddaughter, Cara Shepherd Smith in 2005; and seven brothers and sisters. A Graveside Service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, December 23, 2010, at Pipe Creek Cemetery, with her pastor, the Rev. James Benedict, officiating. There will be no public visitation. A Memorial Service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, January 6, 2011, at the Union Bridge Church of the Brethren, 124 S.
