Bookout, Evelyn Michael

Evelyn Michael Bookout, September 2, 1930 – May 9, 2023, died peacefully at age 92 in her home at Commonwealth Senior Living, Christiansburg, Virginia from complications following a broken hip suffered in a fall on April 30.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Joe L. Bookout; and her parents, Alfred Clyde Michael and Rebecca Ramseur Michael. She is survived by her children, Joe L. Bookout, Jr., Rebecca Sue Holland with son-in-law, J. Patrick Holland, Allan M. Bookout with daughter-in-law, Coreen L. Bookout; grandchildren, Melissa Beecher with husband Gabriel Beecher, Laura Sclafani with husband Michael Sclafani, Steven Holland with wife Jessica Holland, Erica Bookout, Makayla Bookout with wife Savana Mohler; great-grandchildren, Alexa Beecher, Jacob Beecher, Charlie Sclafani, and Sloane Holland.

Evelyn was a proud native Charlottean and lived her entire life in Charlotte with the exception of a year in Raleigh, NC shortly after her marriage to Joe, and her last two years in Christiansburg, VA. She was a 1948 graduate of Central High School and attended Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina. Evelyn was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved all of her family deeply. She was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Christ Lutheran Church, and Cross and Crown Lutheran Church, serving on numerous committees.

Evelyn will be interred with Joe in the columbarium at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Charlotte. A Memorial Service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 4519 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC at a later date. Memorials may be made to Christ Lutheran Church or to Lutheran World Relief.
