blankenship gladys stablesGladys Stables Blankenship, 91, of Narrows, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 13, 2012. A lifelong resident of Giles County, she was born in Narrows on December 3, 1920, and was the daughter of the late Jesse James and Rosa Turner Stables. In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Albert Carr Johnston, who was killed in action during World War II, her former husband, Luther G. Blankenship; three brothers, James O. Stables, John J. Stables, and Robert B. Stables; and a sister, Margaret Stables. Gladys was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Narrows. Affectionately known as “Granny,” she loved sewing and quilting, and taking care of all of her family, and her dog, Spot. A loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Gladys will be dearly missed by her family and many special friends. Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Bobbie S. Hare and husband, Larry, and Betty B. McCroskey and husband, Roger, both of Narrows; three grandsons, Mike Weiss and wife, Melissa, of Pembroke, Mark Weiss and wife, Diane, of Narrows, and Brian McCroskey and wife, Amy, of Cornelius, N.C.; eight great-grandchildren, Jared Weiss, Emily Weiss, Jayden McCroskey, Alivia McCroskey, Camden McCroskey, Alisha Dunford, Tyler Evans, and Austin Evans; a brother, Bill Stables and wife, Pam, of Narrows; several nieces, nephews and cousins, including Donna Oney, Margo Thompson, Troy Stables, Debbie Edmonson and Jimmy Stables. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, September 16, 2012, in the Chapel of Riffe’s Funeral Service in Narrows. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Narrows.
