Blake, Clara Elizabeth Calloway

blake clara elizabethAs the new day dawned on Friday, October 14, 2011, Clara Elizabeth Calloway Blake was released from the extended illness she bravely endured to begin a new life with her Heavenly Creator. Clara was born on February 28, 1927 in Christiansburg and attended the former Hill School and Christiansburg Institute. She joined Asbury United Methodist Church while in her youth and was an active member until illness prevented her attendance. She was employed at Corning Glass and retired from the former Radford Army Ammunition Plant. She was preceded in death by her parents, Trigg M. Sr. and Clara C. Nowlin. Her family includes her daughter, Roberta Blake Greene (Stuart Moon); grandson, Armand D. Blake and granddaughter, Tia B. Greene; one sister, Lena Mae Gillispie; and two brothers, Trigg M. (Sharon) Nowlin, Jr. and John S. (Nancy) Nowlin. She is also survived by many nieces; nephews; cousins and a multitude of beloved friends who lovingly knew her as ” Mamma Liz”. One who was widely known for her generosity and giving, Clara donated her body for science and medicine studies. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at Asbury UMC, led by the Rev. George Warner and Dr. Nathaniel L. Bishop. A gathering for family and friends will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at Asbury on Monday evening, October 17, 2011 and again one hour prior to the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Asbury UMC, 500 Stuart Street or Good Samaritan Hospice, 1160 Moose Dr., Christiansburg.
