Bird, Paul Hatcher

Paul Hatcher Bird Jr. passed away Thursday, April 25, 2013, from complications of a life lived to the fullest. He is survived by his “lovely bride” of 16 years, Nicole; his son, Robert and his wife, Cindy Bird, of Chesapeake; and grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth and Jason Hatcher Bird; his two dogs, Pretty Girl and Chloe. Paul is also survived by his sister, Patricia Chenault; brother, James “Tuck” Bird; their families along with many cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends including the Hokie Nation too numerous to count. Paul never missed an opportunity to reach out and talk to strangers, many of whom became lifelong friends. He looked forward to his annual trek to the Florida Keys. He would spend time on Duval Street in his younger days but in his later years chose the quiet life of Big Pine Key where he cherished the company of the many close friends he made over the years. Although he enjoyed the beautiful beaches of the Keys and St. John, the mountains, trees, and rivers of Virginia were his true love. He moved to Bedford to be closer to the mountains that he so cherished. The Air Force took him from his hometown of Radford to around the globe, but nothing compared to Southwest Virginia where he called home. The fall colors brought out the beauty of the mountains, but on Saturdays he particularly favored Orange and Maroon. Paul was a dedicated Hokie fan for nearly three decades, following his beloved team wherever they played. Paul was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held at DeVilbiss Funeral Home 11 a.m. Monday, April 29, 2013, with the Rev. Gina Rhea officiating. Burial will follow at Dublin Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, April 28, 2013 from 2 to 4 p.m. at DeVilbiss Funeral Home.
