Ellen Claudine Carter Beverly, 92 of Jackson Avenue, Pulaski, Virginia departed this life at 9:40 p.m., Monday, April 18, 2011. Mrs. Beverly was born January 24, 1919 to the late George Carter and Mary Kate Moyer Carter.

She was a lifelong resident of Pulaski. She was a member of Randolph Avenue United Methodist Church and a member of the former New Century United Methodist Church. She was a loyal and dependable devotee who served for decades as financial secretary, recording secretary and supported many other functions. She was co-owner of P&B Asphalt Paving and Sealing.

She was a former employee of New River Community Action, and worked 14 years in the Head Start Program where she progressed from a teacher’s aide to Center director. Mrs. Beverly was a member of the Virginia State Federation of Colored Women’s Club and a Past Worthy Matron of Elizabeth Chapter #20 Order of Eastern Star. She attended Wytheville Community College and graduated from New River Community College with a certificate in Child Care August 27, 1976.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harry Lee Beverly, a son Claudius Lee Jackson; two brothers, Samuel J. and George Carter, and four cousins who were reared by her mother and father, Henry J., Tinsley M., Robert E. Sr., and Raymond Johnson, Sr. She leaves to cherish her memory- Two nieces, Delores D. Pope, Sharon, PA, and Mildred Jennings, Alexandria, VA.; Two nephews, Tyrone G. Carter, Wheatland, PA and Elder Terry Carter, Youngstown, OH- Cousins, Robert E. Jr., and Anthony G. Johnson, Sharon, PA, Elizabeth Lampkins, West Middlesex, PA, Jacqueline Rose, Shaker Heights, OH, Mary Williams, Covington, GA. and Louise McClanahan, Pulaski, VA. Also left to cherish her memory is a host other relatives and friends, including an adopted family; and a special daughter, Felecia P. Matthews, and her husband, William R. Matthews III, and daughter, Nadine Matthews, Round Rock, TX and their son William R, Matthews IV, Detroit MI.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 12 noon, April 23, 2011 at the Randolph Avenue United Methodist Church, Pulaski with Rev. Leroy Henry officiating. Burial will follow in Pinehurst Cemetery, Pulaski. The family will receive friends Saturday from 11:00 A.M. until the hour of service at the church.
