Betty Yates Basham, 74, of Shawsville, went home to be with her Heavenly Father on June 20, 2019, after her battle with COPD, esophageal cancer and colon cancer. She was born November 23, 1944, to the late Jack and Geneva Yates.

When she got married in 1960 she ran a small grocery store in Shawsville. Later she was employed by the old Overall Factory in Christiansburg; Hercules Powder Plant; Montgomery County Crossing Guard between Shawsville Middle and Shawsville High School. She also received her cosmetology training at Joseph’s Beauty Academy in Salem and opened a shop in her home. She also worked at Meadowbrook Nursing Home Kitchen and her most enjoyable and last employment was with her late husband, Tommy at Happy’s Flea Market. They also enjoyed camping and fishing.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, Ward “Tommy” Basham; a daughter, Becky Blomberg; a son, Allen Basham; brothers, Paul and Lee Yates. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Shepherd and a very special son-in-law, Jay Shepherd, of Elliston; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; a special brother-in-law, Bill Basham; a special sister-in-law, Carolyn Helm; lots of nieces; nephews; and other family members; friends; and special neighbors. She will be greatly missed by family and friends!

The family will receive friends on Monday, June 24, 2019 from Noon to 2 p.m. at Lotz Salem Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. in the Chapel. Interment will follow at White’s Cemetery in Shawsville.
