Barker, Walter Grant

Walter Grant Barker, of the Lillydell Community, of Dublin, Va., passed away on Thursday, March 25, 2010, at his home. He was born on December 14, 1926, to the late Fred and Lula Barker. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lettie Mae Walls; and a brother, Paul Barker. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Ima Jean Hayes Barker; one son and daughterin-law, Joe and Maude Barker, of Dugspur; one daughter and son-in-law, Teresa Barker Quesenberry and Glenn, of Pulaski; the light of his life, his grandchildren, Emily Barker and Colin Barker and his wife, Amy, of Pulaski; and greatgrandson and namesake, Nathan Walter Barker. Also two stepgrandsons, Matthew and David Cupp. He is also survived by one brother, Fred Barker, of Dublin; one sister and brother-in-law, Helena and James Icenhour, of Nottingham, Pa.; special friends, Grayson and Lala Blevins of Konnarock, Va.; and brothers-in-law and sistersin-law, Gerald and Mae Hayes, Tom and Minnie Hayes, Harry and Betty Hayes, and Jack Walls; plus many special nieces and nephews. Walter was an avid fly fisherman, loved bluegrass music and playing his banjo and was also an avid ham radio operator with friends all over the world. He was a Navy veteran as well as an Army veteran of the 17th Airborne Division. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Sunday evening, March 28, 2010, from Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski. Walter will be taken to Azen Baptist Church in Konnarock, Va., to lie-in-state from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Monday, March 29, 2010. A graveside service will follow at the Laurel Cemetery, Konnarock at 2 p.m. with the Highlends Fellowship Veteran Honor Guard, Abingdon conducting the Military Graveside Rites. Pastor Vince MacIssac and David Daley will officiate. A reception, provided by the community of Konnarock, will be held following the service at Konnarock Community Center.
