Bales, Garfield

Garfield Bales, 81, of Pearisburg, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at Carilion Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg. Mr. Bales was born on November 29, 1929, in Giles County, Va., and was a son of the late William Harrison Bales and Lenora Blankenship Bales.

Mr. Bales was a retired rigger at the Radford Arsenal in Radford, Va. He gave all his love to his family and enjoyed his gardening and going to Flea Markets.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Estelle Collins Bales, of Pearisburg; one son, Richard Bales, of Pearisburg; one daughter, Linda Peck and her husband, Jim, of Pembroke; two sisters, Ida Laymon, of New Castle, and Marie Journell, of Pearisburg; four grandchildren, Tracy Stafford, Beth Osborne, Susan Adkins, and Billie Huskey; and four great-grandchildren, Ciara Meredith, Jack Meredith, Hunter Adkins and Ali Adkins.

The family will receive friends on Friday evening, May 6, 2011, at the Givens Funeral Chapel from 6 to 7:30 p.m. with funeral services starting at 7:30 p.m. A private family interment will be held at the Birchlawn Burial Park Saturday at 11 a.m. Online condolences can be sent to the family at givensfuneralhome.com.
