Baker, Martha Virginia Spence
Martha Virginia Spence Baker, died Friday, July 10, 2009, in Macon Ga. She was formerly of Draper, Va., having lived in Macon with her son and daughter-in-law since 2003.
Mrs. Baker is survived by her son, Edwin (Eddie) Mack Baker; daughter-in-law, Deborah MickleBaker; and a sister-in-law, Mae Spence; two stepgrandchildren, Jerry Mickle and Jessica Mickle; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Baker also leaves behind several near and dear friends in Pulaski County.
Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by Joseph Mack Baker, her husband of 63 years; her parents, Clydia Ellen Carol Spence and Joseph Madison Spence; two brothers, Millard Spence and Seagle Spence; five sisters, Mannie Duncan, Josephine Spence, Beatrice Murphy, Letha Carol Vick, Ocie Roseberry; and two half sisters, Myrtle Montgomery, and Ethel Pugh.
Martha was a long-time resident of Draper, Va. She worked beside her husband Mack in his trucking and poultry farming business for many years. Martha graduated from Draper High School in 1939. She was a member of the Draper Christian Disciples of Christ Church where she taught Sunday School. Martha was also a long standing member of the Draper Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Draper’s Homemaker’s Club. After retiring from Jefferson Mills in 1985, she volunteered for several years at Pulaski Hospital.
Stevens Funeral Home in Pulaski, Va., is in charge of the funeral arrangements. Visitation will be Tuesday, July 14, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home and the funeral will be held Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Stevens. Interment will follow at Draper’s Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery, in Draper, Va.
