Alberta Thompson Ayers, 80, of Grove Drive, Pulaski, died Saturday afternoon July 28, 2007 in Pulaski Community Hospital. She was born on July 4, 1927 in Pulaski, and was the daughter of the late Lula Guynn Thompson and Sherman Lee Thompson, Sr.

Alberta was a very active member of the First Christian Church, Pulaski (Disciples of Christ), where she served as Deaconess and member of the Church Board. She served on the Church Planning Committee and helped organize special events, such as the church anniversaries and the Bereavement Committee. She also served on the Executive Board of the Pulaski Christian Women’s Club and Stonecraft Ministries, and taught pre-school for many years at the First United Methodist Church in Pulaski.

She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in the former Pulaski Chapter #113, was a member of the Sunset Hills Garden Club since it was organized in 1969. In addition, she was highly involved in scouting where she served as scout leader, from Brownies to Girl Scouts, for over 12 years. She was also a member of the Alpha Upsilon Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi, an international sorority. She was a lady who loved her family, her church, but most of all, a lady who loved people.

Her family wishes to thank Dr. Donald Yoder for his untiring devotion to her during her illness and the doctors and nurses at the Cancer Care Center. A special heartfelt thank you goes to the nurses at the Skill Care Facility at the Pulaski Community Hospital, who gave so much kindness in her care.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Frederick (Fred) Ayers, and a brother Sherman Lee Thompson, Jr. She is survived by her loving and devoted daughter, Angelia A. Underwood and her husband Danny L. Underwood of Pulaski; granddaughters, Lindsay Huff Fedok and her husband Jason of Alexandria, Lauren Huff Bullen and her husband Charles of Roanoke; and grandson Hugh Huff, IV (Chip) of Salem; brother, Lilburn O. Thompson (Buddy) and his wife Joyce of of Pulaski; sister-in-law, Phyllis Shumate and her husband Alban of Radford; her special cousin, Orita Yelton and her husband Claude of Pulaski. Also survived by several loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the First Christian Church, 524 N. Jefferson Ave. Pulaski with the Rev. Randy Winn officiating. Entombment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. Visiting will be anytime Monday after 2 p.m. at Thomas M. Seagle & Sons where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m.

An Eastern Star service will be conducted, in memory of Alberta, at 7:30 p.m. in the Seagle Chapel where the public is encouraged to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the “New Building Fund” at the First Christian Church 924 N. Jefferson Ave. Pulaski, Va. 24301.
