Anderson, Margaret Shrader

amem_hummingbird.jpgMargaret Shrader Anderson, of Santa Cruz, Calif., passed away on July 20, 2009, at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz at the age of 90. Margaret was born in Virginia on October 15, 1918, the daughter of Augustus end Kate (Brewster) Shrader.

She grew up in Bishop, Va., where as a young woman she met and married Elmo Anderson. The couple later moved with their two young sons to Radford, Va., where she lived most of her adult life. In 1960 she moved to Scotts Valley and has lived in Santa Cruz County since.

She was characterized by her family as a strong and courageous woman, evidenced by her ability to still live independently at the age of 90. In her spare time she enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.

She is survived by her two sons, Auburn Anderson and Robert Anderson, both of Santa Cruz; and her sister, Dorothy Montgomery, of Lynchburg, Va. She is also survived by one grandson, Bryan Anderson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmo Anderson, in 1989.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2009, at Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin, Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 31, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford, Va., 540-639-2422.
