Anderson, Anna Jean Altizer

Anna Jean Altizer Anderson, age 70 of Dublin, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at her home, following a long illness, and she is now in the presence of her Lord. She was known by her friends as “The Pin Lady.” She was born in Pulaski, on August 27, 1943, and was the daughter of the late Arthur G. Garfield, Jr. (A.G.), and Catherine Meredith Altizer Sayers. She graduated from Pulaski High School in the class of 1961, and then attended Radford College. Jean was employed by the Virginia State Police at the Dublin Area Office for over 38 years, where she was a mother, sister, confidant, counselor and religious person to those she was so blessed to work beside. Her employment was continuous until she was forced to retire because of an illness. She was also a hospice volunteer for 8 years. She enjoyed volunteering for hospice, and loved those she helped. In 1994, she won a governors’ award for volunteering excellence with hospice, and was presented the award by the former Governor Doug Wilder. She was a member at Memorial Baptist Church in Pulaski, and was very active. At her time of death, she was a member of the Dublin Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-father, Garland Lee Sayers, and a brother, Jerry Wayne Sayers. She leaves behind, a husband, Melville (Mel) Wesley Anderson of Dublin, a brother, Roger D. Altizer and his wife Nancy, of Pulaski, and a sister, Barbara A. Hayes, and her husband, Bruce of Richmond, along with a host of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her pets, Allie, and Andy, that she so dearly loved. A special thanks and gratitude is extended to Dr. Tina Smusz and nurses, Venessa, Debbie, Treasa and others for their love and care. Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 1, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Dublin Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dennis Jones and the Rev. Mike Honaker officiating. Interment will follow in Thornspring Cemetery where the Virginia State Police will preside as pallbearers.
