Charlie Sherman Altizer, 87, of Christiansburg, Va., passed away Saturday. Early in the morning hours of May 16, 2009, Sherman and Rachel Altizer were reunited after more than a dozen years of earthly separation. Mom and Dad had over 54 years of marriage and now are together for eternity. Dad was faithful to her, even during her last four and a half years spent in the hospital, missing only two days of being with her due to snow. Dad was also faithful to his God and greatly enjoyed his music and guitar, even singing with friends in the hospital during his last day here on earth. Dad was quick to share a good story, was quick to laugh and treasured a good meal, especially Mom’s banana pudding and fried pies. I believe he’s having one now as they catch up on the news of their grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Although we shall miss him greatly, we know that his suffering is now over. We love you and wish you great peace and a much deserved rest from your work here on earth. I’m sure you were pleased to hear these words as you entered the heavenly gates, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Rachel; daughter, Evelyn Pegram; and granddaughter, Pamela Stephenson. He is survived by sons and daughter-in-law, Terry and Dedra Altizer, Charlie Wayne Altizer; daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Curtis Harris; granddaughter and husband, Sherry and Rick Grimes; grandchildren, Devin and Megan Altizer, Trey Bland; great-grandchildren, Jeremy Whitley and Brandon Grimes; sisters, Lola Tourigny, Vernice Lucas, Norma Wells, Ruby Lavinder. Funeral services 2 p.m. Monday, May 18, 2009, at DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Radford, with the Rev. Jerry Shepherd officiating. Interment to follow at Highland Memory Garden, Dublin.
