aliff maurice kemper jrMaurice Kemper Aliff, Jr., 73 of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, December 18th, 2013 at Emeritus at Roanoke. He was born in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware on July 6th, 1940, and was the son of the late Maurice Kemper Aliff, Sr. and Jennie Morris Green Aliff. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Turpin Aliff, a son, Maurice Kemper (Marty) Aliff, III; a sister, Madeline A. Harvey; a brother-in-law, Paul G. Harvey; a brother, Charles H. Aliff; and a brother-in-law, Glenn Stover. A 1958 graduate of Peterstown High School, Maurice served in the United States Air Force, eventually earning the rank of Airman First Class. He was a 1966 graduate of West Virginia University and also earned a Master’s Degree from Lynchburg College in 1975. For 24 years, he was an electrical engineer at General Electric in Salem, and later served as a project manager for Toshiba in both Houston, Texas and Oakville, Ontario. Following his retirement in 2000, Maurice made his home in Narrows, where he cared for his mother-in-law, Elsie Riddle, and later, his wife, Joyce, during their illnesses. He was a prolific poet, having many of his works published. A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, he will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. Left to cherish his memory are a son, Gregory Aliff and wife Heather of Roanoke; two grandchildren, Mason Aliff and Alexis Aliff; a great grandson, Bradley Ryan, all of Roanoke; two sisters, Ruthanna A. Stover of Peterstown, and Jeanne A. Martin and husband Bobby of Salem; a sister-in-law, Becky H. Aliff of Salem; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 22nd, 2013 at 2 PM in the Chapel of Riffe’s Funeral Service in Narrows with Rev. Jim Jenkins officiating and military honors provided by Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, VFW Post #6000 of Narrows, American Legion Post #68 of Narrows, Post #311 of Pembroke, and Post #145 of Peterstown. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at Riffe’s Funeral Chapel Sunday from 12 noon until just prior to the service.
