Akers, Troy Bennett

Troy Bennett Akers passed away at his home in Radford on Tuesday, November 15, 2011. He would have celebrated his 88th birthday on November 22nd.

He was a United States Marine veteran having served during World War II and attended Carter Street United Methodist Church. He retired from construction work where he was a heavy equipment operator.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Sylvia Tolbert Akers; two sons and a special daughter-in-law, Steven Troy and Gwenn Akers, of Radford, and Barry Lynne Akers, of Dublin; brother, James Akers, of Radford; three sisters, Edith Sutphin, of Radford, Mary Buckner, of Snowville, and Reva Martin, of Christiansburg; five grandchildren, Michael Troy Akers, Barry Lynne Akers II, Brandon Calvin Akers, Samantha Akers, and Allyson Akers; two stepgrandchildren, Mitch and Nikki Roberts; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; and his special canine companion “Abby.”

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 18, 2011, at the Carter Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Betsy King officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin where members of VFW Post #776 will conduct Military Graveside Rites. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, November 17, 2011, from 4 until 6 p.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.
