Samuel “Sonny” Melvin Akers (May 2, 1935 – February 2, 2021) On Tuesday, February 2, 2021 Sonny left the world behind. COVID didn’t get him, it was gravity.

He was born in Alleghany Springs, Virginia on May 2, 1935. He leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Betty; his son, Sam; and his grandchildren Kelley and Oliver. As well as his canine best buddy, Tripper.

Dad was an excellent mechanic. As a tribute to his intellect, his skills were self taught. Conventional wisdom in the community has it that he was “the best carburetor man in Montgomery County”. He was passionate about cars, especially fast ones. And he passed that on to his sons.

He started running in the 1970’s and didn’t stop until his body told him he had to. He left us with a trophy case overflowing with ribbons, pins, and trophies, (many for 1st place in his age group) as a testament to how well he did at it. He was always reminding us that we should be doing something to stay fit.

Sonny loved being around friends, and there are so many. He enjoyed teasing and being teased because he loved to laugh. And he especially liked to make others laugh. We will all miss him and his sense of humor dearly.

With his guidance, his sons grew up knowing that the only difference between us and our black neighbors is their skin color. He was a model for everyone.

Given the COVID situation, the family has decided it is not prudent to have a service at this time.

His favorite charity was St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (800-478-5833). So rather than send flowers, please send St. Judes a donation in his name.
