Akers, Marvin Saford

Marvin Saford Akers, 80, of Pulaski, Va., passed into Heaven on Saturday, February 5, 2011, with his wife of 54 years by his side.

Upon graduation from high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country in the Korean War as a fire fighter. When returning home he was employed by Sweet Ore, Pulaski Apparel and retired from Volvo. Camping and working with antique farm tractors were two of his pleasures. In the spring, friends and neighbors requested he plow their gardens or harvest their hay. This was not work for him it was play.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude and Beulah Akers; and two brothers, Elden and Danny Akers. He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Richardson Akers, of Pulaski; brother, Clayton Akers, of Key West, Fla.; sisters, Frieda Albano, of Pulaski, and Geneieve Via, of Arizona; special nieces and nephews, Monique Surratt, of Hillsville, Asterie Cox, of Tazewell, Cecil Albano, of Pulaski, and Michael Albano, of Marion; a special friend and caregiver, Charles Kemp, of Draper; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Freida and Vernon White, of Hillsville, Maxine Allison, of Hampton, Oneda Chrisley, of Hillsville, Colleene White, of Roanoke, Berta Jennings, of Hillsville, Mary Richardson, of Winchester, and Elsie Richardson, of Hillsville; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. on Tuesday, February 8, 2011, from the Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randall Lawrence officiating. Burial will follow in the Thornspring Cemetery, Pulaski County with the Hillsville VFW Post #1115 conducting the Military Graveside Rites. Visiting will be held on Monday, February 7, 2011, from the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8p.m. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski.
