Akers, Garland Wayne
Garland Wayne Akers, 61, of Radford, passed away Friday, August 9, 2013. He was a Public Works Supervisor for the Town of Blacksburg with 25 years of service and a United States Army veteran.
Those left to cherish his memory are his best friend and wife of 38 years, Karen Cox Akers, of Radford; daughter, Leigh Anne Akers, of Annandale; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Jeremy and Lisa Akers, of Harrisonburg; parents, Howard and Margaret L. Akers, of Radford; brothers and sister-in-law, Robert Akers, of Floyd and Eddie and Earlene Akers, of Riner; sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Danny West, of Riner and Nancy and Eddie King, of Radford; four-legged companion, Roxie; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A celebration of his life will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, August 11, 2013, at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with Pastor Jerry Gibson of Gethsemane Baptist Church officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the time of the service on Sunday. Military graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 12, 2013, at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made to the Montgomery County Humane Society, P.O. Box 287, Blacksburg, VA 24063. The Akers family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.

Karen I’m so sorry to hear about garland . Would love to see you . I lost my husband 16 yes ago it’s rough. I don’t know if you heard Robert was killed in a wreck may 1 2012 . I never knew something could be so hard . I have to real with it because he has a beautiful 9yr old daughter and Christy has a beautiful 2 and half year old daughter. I couldn’t go on if it wasen’t for them . I’m on fb Doris Cook. Would love to hear from you. Again I’m so sorry to hear about Garland . You hang in there even tho it doesn’t stop hurting you have to keep on going . Love ya Doris
