Wiss, Dorothy Gentry
Dorothy Gentry Wiss, 95, passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2008, in Blacksburg, Va. She was born on October 2, 1913, to Mr. and Mrs. James Harvey Gentry, of Henderson, Ky. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry H. Wiss, a retired professor of Architecture at Virginia Tech; her brother, Kendall Gentry, of Louisville, Ky. She was also preceded in death by her niece, Dorothy Kitchen Whitehouse, of Louisville, Ky.
She is survived by two nephews, William K. Gentry, of Henderson, and Robert H. Kitchen, of Oak Island, N.C.; by one niece, Susan Kitchen Greenwell, of Louisville; two great-nieces; and two greatnephews.
Mrs. Wiss received her undergraduate degree from the University of Kentucky, and completed her graduate degree at Cornell University. She worked in the extension program at the University of Kentucky and then joined the State 4-H Extension Program at Virginia Tech in 1955. Following her retirement, she participated in many community activities, helped organize and initiate the Virginia Tech Foreign Wives Association and served as a sponsor in that organization for many years. Additionally, she was a charter member of Mountain View Garden Club and was a longtime member of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2008, at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, 600 Prices Fork Road, Blacksburg, Va. 24060. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Wiss requested that contributions be made in her name to her church or to Smith Mountain Lake 4-H Center, 775 Hermitage Road, Wirtz, Va. 24184.
