Whittington, Palmer Lloyd

Palmer Lloyd Whittington, 98, of Pulaski, died early Sunday morning, November 12, 2006 in the Pulaski Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born November 20, 1907 in Woodlawn, Va., and was the son of the late Nora Bell Robinson Whittington and James Edward Whittington. Mr. Whittington was a member of the Church of God, a retired Machinist from Xaloy and was known throughout the Pulaski area as a master home builder.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Bertie Chrisley Whittington; his son-in-law, E. Dean Moore of Apharetta, Ga.; and three brothers and two sisters. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Richard Burchett of Atlanta, Ga.; two grandchildren, Deborah B. Moore of Alpharetta, and Rhonda B. Ellis and her husband Paul, of Braselton, Ga., and R. Terry Burchett of Atlanta; two great-grandchildren, Bethany and Jon Paul Ellis of Braselton; two brothers: Homer and Cecil Whittington of Lenoir, N.C.; and a very special friend and caregiver, Maxine Grimes of Pulaski.

Mr. Whittington was asked by an ICU Nurse in early October of this year, what was the greatest memory that ever happened to you in your nearly 99 years. HIS ANSWER WAS THE DAY THAT I GAVE MY HEART TO JESUS. He and his wife were born again in 1931, and served God faithfully together the rest of their life.

Mr. Whittington came to Pulaski in 1925 to find work, where his first job was with Pulaski Furniture Company. His skills were provided to the U.S. Government during W.W.II by building the Radford Army Ammunition Plant and then the Dublin Bag Loading Plant. He was then a machinist at the Pulaski Foundry for 10 years, and then was employed by the Xaloy Company.

He especially loved working with wood. He built several houses and repaired many. He loved hunting, especially deer hunting and gardening. This was the first year that he did not have a garden.
