Weddle, Alton Harmon

Alton Harmon Weddle, 87, of Willis, Va., passed away on Thursday, July 1, 2010, at Skyline Manor Nursing Home. A World War II veteran, Alton was a well-known barber for 64 years operating from the Floyd Barber Shop and in later years in a barber shop located near his home.

Alton loved bluegrass music and played the banjo for 75 years. His favorite pastime was playing music with friends and neighbors and for community events. Alton was a member of the Topeco Church of the Brethren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geneva Moles Weddle; one son, John David Weddle; his parents, John R. and Leeta Weddle; and one brother, D.T. Weddle. Alton is survived by three children, one daughter, Darnell Harris, of Willis, Va.; two sons and their wives, Steve Weddle and Sandy, of Raleigh, N.C., and Tony Weddle and Vona, of Willis, Va.; five grandchildren, Larry Wayne Harris, Brandon Weddle, Christie Weddle, and and Tracie Young, all of Willis, and Eric Weddle, of Raleigh, N.C.; two great-grandchildren, John Robert Harris and Tyler Young, both of Willis; and one sister, Kathleen Jamison, of Floyd.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 3, 2010, at Topeco Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Mike Varner officiating. Interment will follow in the Topeco Cemetery with Military Rites by Hillsville VFW Post #1115. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 2, 2010, at the Maberry Funeral Home.
