Varner, Sr., Russell Martin

amem_lighthouse2.jpgRussell Martin Varner, Sr., 82, of Radford, Va., died Thursday, October 29, 1992 at 9:40 p.m. in the Radford Community Hospital. He had been in declining health for the past four weeks.

He was born May 16, 1910, at Red Creek, Tucker County, a son of the late Harvey Varner and Ada Roy Varner.

His wife of 62 years, Flora Lee Valentine, survives.

Also surviving are one son, Russell Martin Varner Jr., Radford; four daughters, Mrs. Donald D. (Vivian Lee) Smith, Dublin, Va., Maxine Mae Varner, Radford, Mrs. Joyce Ann Pudder and Mrs. Peter P. (Coral Jean) Tomaro, both of Old Bridge, N.J.; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, and two brothers-in-law, Frank “Wimpy” Valentine, Elkins and Woodrow Valentine, Crystal Springs.

One son, one daughter and eight grandchildren preceded him in death also.

Mr. Varner was a long time resident of Elkins, Jamesburg, N.J., and a resident of Radford for the past eight years.

Friends may call at the DeVilbiss Funeral Home, Grove Ave., Radford, Va., from 7-9 p.m. today.

Graveside services will be held at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery in West Piney, Va. Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Donald D. Smith officiating.
