Surber, Mary Alice French

Mary Alice French Surber, 62 of Glen Lyn passed away Wednesday, December 27th, 2006 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born in the Wolf Creek community on February 7th, 1944 and was the daughter of the late Ballard P. French and Ethel Akers McKinney. In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Coy McKinney, Harold McKinney, Nathan McKinney, Donald McKinney, and Dillard McKinney; and two sisters, Reba Harold and Eupha McKinney.

She was a former employee of Foodland in Rich Creek and Lil? Mac?s Grocery in Glen Lyn, and was a member of the Church of Christ at Glen Lyn. She was a proud grandmother and will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.

She is survived by her husband of over 40 years, Jerry Wayne Surber of Glen Lyn; a daughter and her husband, Rhonda and Darrell Sartin of Glen Lyn; a son and his wife, Donnie Lee and Chandra Surber of Jonesborough, Tennessee; four grandchildren, J.W. Sartin, Joshua Sartin, Jake Sartin, and Dawson Flack; four sisters, Carolene Riddle Clowers of Narrows, Doris Hardiman and husband Bob of Richmond, Naomi Blankenship and husband James (Tad) of Narrows, Ewilda Leftwich of Glen Allen, Virginia; five brothers, Malcom French and wife Betty of Sandston, Virginia, Earl McKinney of Rich Creek, Andy McKinney of Narrows, James McKinney of New Mexico, Leo McKinney and wife Marilyn of Alabama, and Clinton McKinney and wife Jill of Boulder, Colorado.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 30th, 2006 at 2 PM in the Chapel of Riffe’s Funeral Service in Narrows with Rev. Aubrey Whitlow officiating. The family requests that those sending memorial contributions, please consider Carilion Hospice Services – New River Valley.
