Sullivan, Richard B.

Richard B. Sullivan of Prices Fork, died Saturday, September 9, 2006 after a brief illness. Mr. Sullivan was born in 1922 near White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. After high school, he went to work at the Radford Arsenal, where he retired in 1986. He married in 1942, and served in World War Two in the Army Air Corps as a nose gunner on a B24.

Mr. Sullivan saw service in England and other locations, and was awarded the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war, he returned to the Prices Fork area to establish his home and raise his family. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Blacksburg since 1948, and served many years as an usher.

Mr. Sullivan was a long-time member of the Prices Fork Grange where he served in various offices and actively participated in its many projects and programs. Mr. Sullivan served over 20 years on the Montgomery County Planning Commission. In retirement he took a part-time job with Montgomery County Recycling and worked at the recycling site on Prices Fork Road. At home Mr. Sullivan tended a vegetable garden, and enjoyed reading and the evening news.

Mr. Sullivan is survived by his wife of 64 years Margaret Mathena Sullivan. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Richard and Christine Sullivan, Arlington, Virginia; Lawrence Sullivan, Radford; George and Rita Sullivan, Prices Fork; and Joe and Beverly Sullivan, Anchorage, Alaska; and by daughters Peggy Sullivan, Fairlawn, and Mary Sullivan, Christiansburg.

He is also survived by grandchildren Michael Sullivan, Katie and Rick Booth, Jennifer and Brian Brotherton, Elizabeth Sullivan, Robin, Ryan, Sam and Sarah Sullivan; and by great-grandchildren, Hannah and Erin Booth, and Daniel and Rachel Brotherton.

Also surviving are brother Frank Sullivan, Akron, Ohio; sister Lois and her husband Phil O’Doherty, Covington, Virginia; sister Jean and her husband Joe Danks, Punta Gorda, Florida; and sisters-in-law Ada Sullivan, Akron, Ohio, and Jean Sullivan, Charleston, West Virginia.

The family will receive friends at McCoy Funeral Home on Monday September 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be officiated by Fr. James Arsenault at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Harding Avenue at 11 a.m. Tuesday September 12, with burial to follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
