Roger Dale Simpkins, 59, of Old School House Road in Eggleston, Va., departed this life on Thursday evening, January 7, 2010, at Giles Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Born in Giles County on April 2, 1950, he was a son of the late Elmer Lewis and Dorothy Marie Hopkins Simpkins.

Roger had worked as a mechanic for the Giles County School Bus Garage and for many years for the United States Forest Service. He was a member of Bear Spring United Methodist Church and for 38 years a member of the Eggleston Volunteer Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, James Simpkins; and a brotherin-law, Nickie Johnson. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Nedica Johnson Simpkins; his son and daughter-in-law, Roger Dale Simpkins II and Leslie Williams Simpkins, of Pembroke; his grandsons, Nathan Simpkins and Nicholas Simpkins; his brothers and sisters-in-law, William “Bill” and Wilma Simpkins, of Dublin, Jeff and Roxanne Simpkins, of Wytheville, and David Simpkins, of Pocahontas, W.Va.; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Brenda and Bobby Carson, of Blacksburg, Donna and Bill Lindberg, of Antioch, Ill., and Wanda and Dean Justice, of Salem, Wis.; and several special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. on Monday, January 11, 2010, in the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow St., Pembroke with Pastor Shahn Wilburn and Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in the Simpkins Family Cemetery at Eggleston.
