Shutt, Arvenia Elizabeth White

Arvenia Elizabeth White Shutt, 87, of 221 Planet Drive in Princeton, W. Va. died Thursday, October 19, 2006 at her residence.

Born January 5, 1919 in Mercer County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Walter Lee and Cora Reed White. She retired in 1982, after 40 years of service in the Mercer County, WV and Giles County, VA School Systems, having last taught at Giles High School in Pearisburg. She also taught classes at Concord University. She was a graduate of Princeton High School, earned her Bachelors Degree in Education at Marshall University and her Masters Degree from West Virginia University.

Arvenia was a faithful member of the First Christian Church in Princeton, where she formerly served as Chair of the Congregation, Chair of Deaconess, Vice-Chair of the Church Board and was a member, Past President and study director of the Rebecca Barnett Circle. She was honored by the church as “Mother of The Year” in 1988. She was also a faithful visitor to many shut-ins. She was also a member of the Bud & Blossom Garden Club and the DMA (Don’t Mention Age) Club at Johnston Chapel Baptist Church.

Arvenia was an avid traveler and enjoyed many trips following her retirement. In addition to her parents her husband, Kelly Eugene Shutt, two grandsons, Joshua Lee Shutt and Mark Robinson Metzler and two sisters, Vivian White Hatcher and an infant sister, Lucille, preceded her in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Jean Shutt of Roanoke, Va.; two sons, Eddie Shutt and his wife Linda of Princeton and Sam Eugene Shutt and his wife Sally of Hendersonville, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Kelly Michelle Bewick and her husband Andy, Kristin Lorraine Osborne, Kimberlee Stephenson and her husband Justin, Christopher Shutt, Sergey Shutt and Roman Shutt; one great-grandchild, Tyler Christopher Stephenson; one sister, Helen Y. Perry of Princeton; caregivers, Frances Hubbard, Shirley Slater and Helga Helton.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, October 23, 2006, at the First Christian Church on Straley Ave. in Princeton with Rev. Gary Lyons officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Pallbearers will be Bob Monahan, Pete Caldwell, Danny McAfee, Paul Douglas, Pete Carter and Sam Conner.
