SHUFFELBARGER, Emmett G.

Dr. Emmett Garnett Shufflebarger, 74, of Radford, died Monday, June 5, 2006. He was a native of Bluefield, Virginia and a graduate of Emory & Henry College. He received a master’s degree from the College of William and Mary and a doctorate from Virginia Tech. After serving in the Army Security Agency, he taught at Martinsville High School. He worked for the Virginia Department of Education and later for Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In addition to being a highly respected educator, he was a dedicated layman in the United Methodist Church and a member of Grove United Methodist Church in Radford.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jones Shufflebarger; a son, Thomas G. Shufflebarger and wife, Ellen of Hoover, Alabama; a daughter, Dr. Ann C. Shufflebarger of Virginia Beach; and two granddaughters, Erin and Meg Shufflebarger of Hoover, Alabama. He is also survived by two sisters, Ann Haner and husband, Byron of Colonial Heights, Virginia, and Nancy Shupe of Gold Canyon, Arizona; and a number of beloved nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 7, 2006 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Grove United Methodist Church in Radford. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 8, 2006 at 11 a.m. at Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. James L. Bennington officiating. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Emory & Henry Cemetery, Emory, Virginia. The family will receive friends after the interment in the fellowship hall of Emory United Methodist Church.
