James Edward (Steve) Sherman, 91, of Wake Forest, departed Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at Lewis Gale Hospital-Montgomery. He was born in Whitethorne, Va., December 22, 1923, to the late Robert and Juanita Paige Sherman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Bannister Sherman; brothers, Wallace J. Sherman, Arthur Sherman, William B. Sherman, Oscar O. Sherman Sr., Homer C. Sherman, John Sherman, Frank B. Sherman; sisters, Elizabeth Proctor, Cynthia Milton, and Amy Johnson; grandson, Tony Austin. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army. He was an ordained minister having served at First Baptist Church, Wake Forest.

He is survived by his four daughters and sons-in-law, Jessie and Butch Eaves, Phyllis and James Burrell, Lorraine and Dennis Hedgepeth, Annetta Sherman and fiance Brian Watson; son, Darren Sherman; sister, Lillian Jones; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Carter and Shirley Sherman, Leon and Ada Sherman; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; very special friend, Bernice Bishop; caregiver, Linda Eaves, and Penny King.

The family would like to give a very special thank you to the Lewis Gale Hospital-Montgomery ICU Staff for their care.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, 2015, in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hiawatha Spraggins officiating. Interment will follow in the Wake Forest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, SW, Blacksburg.
