Proffitt, Raymond Frederick

Reverend and Pastor Raymond F. Proffitt age 82 of Floyd, Virginia passed away February 17, 2024 in his home surrounded by his family that loved him. Born on October 22, 1941 he was the son of the late Dan and Stella Proffitt.

The love of his life was his wife, Velvie Jean Proffitt. Together they shared a life of love, devotion, and service to their Lord and Savior. He was a loving father, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother and friend to many. He was a coal miner for many years. Raymond’s heart was always filled with the fire of the Holy Spirit. He transitioned from the mines to the ministry, answering God’s call to become an evangelist and later a pastor. For many years, he evangelized for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ all over the country side until becoming Pastor for the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Riner, Virginia. He loved God and was a fisherman of souls. Whatever you needed, that is what he was. He loved to hunt with his sons and enjoyed having church with his family and community.

As we bid farewell to this man of God, let us hold to the words of Psalm 23, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” Raymond Proffitt lived by these words, shepherding many to the love and light of the Lord. His legacy will continue to flourish in the lives of those he touched. In the hearts of his family, congregation, and community, Reverend Raymond Proffitt’s spirit will forever be a guiding star. His family will pick up the torch he carried, and carry on with the work he and his wife began.

In addition to his parents, Reverend Proffitt is preceded in death by his son, Raymond Proffitt; granddaughter, Stephany Proffitt; grandson, Matthew Proffitt; great-grandson, Tyler Proffitt; nephew, Daniel Proffitt; and neice, Robin Proffitt.

Left to cherish his memory to their hearts are his wife, Velvie Proffitt; sons, Larry Proffitt (Kathy), Gary Proffitt (Betty), and Jeff Proffitt; daughters, Debra Ray (Ronnie), Kathy Horton (Randy), and Velvie Patrie (Chris); 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; brother, Thomas Proffitt and the members of his congregation of faith.
