Neblett, James Macfarland, Jr.

James Macfarland Neblett, Jr., of Pulaski, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, February 25, 2006. He was born in Coeburn to the late James M. Neblett, Sr. and Hazel Wolfe Neblett and grew up in Bristol, Va. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Emory & Henry College. He played football for Emory and is a member of the College’s Sports Hall of Fame. One of his fondest college memories was playing on Emory & Henry’s Tangerine Bowl team.

He proudly served in the United States Navy for two years prior to receiving a Masters of Education from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He began his career by teaching in Saltville, Va. and then worked for Wyeth Laboratories in pharmaceutical sales.

He returned to his career in education in Pulaski County as a teacher at Central Elementary and was later principal of Newbern and Draper Elementary Schools, retiring in 1991. In addition, he served many years as a member of Pulaski Town Council and numerous boards within the community. He was a long time member of Christ Episcopal Church, serving in many capacities throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Lois Herd Neblett. He is survived by four children and their spouses, Jim and Donna Neblett of Raleigh, N.C., Joe and Maggie Neblett of Lynchburg, Kathy and Mike Waller of Pulaski and Jon and Carolyn Neblett of Richmond; five grandchildren, Niki and Parker Neblett of Lynchburg, Wade and Katie Waller of Pulaski, and Cooper Neblett of Richmond. He is also survived by three sisters and their spouses, Ann James of Johnson City, Tenn., Mary and Hank Hankins of Wise and Sarah and Bill Hamner of Williamsburg; numerous family members and friends as well as many teammates and friends in the Emory & Henry community.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at Christ Episcopal Church in Pulaski with the Rev. Vicki Houk officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church. The E & H Fund at Emory & Henry College or charity of choice.
