Morgan, Nancy Dyer

At age 92, Nancy Dyer Morgan peacefully went home to her heavenly Father on the evening of November 27, 2023. She was surrounded by her loving family during her final moments.

Nancy had a joy for life and a generous heart. She greeted everyone with a smile, had a playful sense of humor, and was always ready for a hug.

Born on July 30, 1931, in Tennessee, Nancy moved to Virginia when she was a young girl. She spent most of her life in Narrows where she was widely respected and adored. As a teen she worked at Dutton’s Drug Store. She was a 1950 graduate of Narrows High School and though it wasn’t common for women to go to college at that time, Nancy attended and graduated from Richmond Professional Institute (now VCU). She later received a Master of Education from Radford University.

Nancy was a school teacher for 34 years. She was the Head Teacher at Penvir and then taught at Narrows Elementary. She loved teaching so much that she gave up retirement to teach part-time and substitute for several more years. Generations of families have stories from being in Mrs. Morgan’s classroom.

Nancy’s faith guided her throughout her life. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Narrows where over the years she had been a Sunday School teacher, Youth Director, Sun Beam Leader, active in the Ladies’ Fellowship, and served on various committees. The people of First Baptist Church were an extension of Nancy’s family. She constantly prayed for them, celebrated weddings and births with them, and comforted them in challenging times.

At home, Nancy was a devoted matriarch who cherished her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She filled their home with happiness, love, and laughter. When she wasn’t doting over her family, Nancy was usually on the phone with her friends who were all so special to her.

Nancy is preceded in death by her parents Elbert and Frances Dyer; her sister Patricia (Rudy) Young; her son Chris Morgan, her grandson Jarrett Lane, and countless friends.

Nancy will be deeply missed by her daughter Tracey Lane; son Lloyd Morgan; granddaughters Alicia Lane and Fawntane (Roger) Shepherd; great-grandchildren Landon, Kennedy, Kaydance, and Addison Shepherd, and her loving nieces and nephews.
