Montgomery, William Nolan

With a heart full of cherished memories and profound love, we announce the peaceful passing of William Nolan Montgomery, on February 29, 2024. Born on August 26, 1942, in Virginia, Nolan was a man whose gentle nature and loving heart left a permanent mark on the lives he touched.

Nolan’s journey began in Newport, Virginia, where he was born to Charles Montgomery and Reba Porterfield Montgomery. His early years were filled with the joys of rural life, and it was there that he developed a lifelong love for baseball. As kids, after the farmwork was done, many would go to Mrs. Reba’s for a game of baseball or a meal, to return home after dark. The boys often looked forward to times where his uncle too would come to play a game or practice. Nolan’s talent shone on the baseball diamond, where he skillfully played the position of catcher, embodying the teamwork and dedication he would carry throughout his life. Later in life, though he joined the church league where he played pitcher and helped coach.

After a fulfilling career as a produce manager at Wades, Nolan dedicated his time and energy to his passions and community. His love for the Lord was evident in his commitment to the family of faith at Bethel Chapel, where he not only sang in the choir but also assisted in any way needed, serving with a humble heart and a willing spirit. He would also look to make a difference in the life of a child.

An outdoorsman at heart, Nolan found solace in the serenity of nature. Whether it was a quiet morning spent fishing or the thrill of coon hunting, these moments allowed him to connect with the world around him. Nolan’s love for football also brought excitement to his life, as he enjoyed watching the game with the same enthusiasm, he had for playing sports.

Nolan’s legacy is carried on by his beloved wife, Hilda Linkous Montgomery, and his daughters, Rhonda Custer (Randy) and Lynn Montgomery. His memory is also cherished by his daughter-in-law, Regina Montgomery; grandchildren, Allen “Jeff” Martin, Sidney Custer, Katy Custer, Heather Custer, Bailey Custer, and Chas Akers (Josh); and great-granddaughters, Hailey and Zenith. His sisters-in-law, Shirley Linkous, Bonnie Linkous, Brenda Linkous, Arlene and Eddie Clyburn, Gladys Cook, Maxie and Keith Fugate, Clarmont and Jimmy Price, along with his goddaughter, Peyton Evans, several nieces and nephews, his church family, and his neighbors whether in Pearisburg or on the mountain will miss his thoughtful presence.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Reba Montgomery; his children, Becky Vaught and William Todd Montgomery; his brother, Dwayne Montgomery; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Harry Linkous, Dolly and Ralph Whitlock, Leon Linkous, Allen Linkous, HB Linkous, Odell Linkous, and Mattie and Charlie Orange, Nolan leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and faith.

Nolan’s life was a portrait of thoughtfulness and gentleness. His loving nature was the cornerstone of his existence, touching all who knew him.
As we bid farewell to Nolan, we reflect on a life beautifully lived and a soul that has truly made an impact. Nolan’s journey through life was a testament to the power of a kind heart and a steadfast spirit. As we celebrate the life of William Nolan Montgomery, we are reminded of the joy he found in life’s simple pleasures and the unwavering love he had for his family and friends.

The family wish to think all who have helped in the care of Nolan for these past few years from the family of faith of Bethel Chapel; the sweet care received by Carilion New River Valley Medical Center, Radford Health and Rehabilitation Center, and Carilion Hospice; a special friend, Betty Ann; and Virginia Blind Services.

The family will receive friends in a time of visitation on Saturday, March 9, 2024 from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 2:00 PM in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel with Pastors Eddie Kendall and Earl Riggs officiating.
