McGuire, Ruth Morton

Ruth “Micki” Morton McGuire, 70, of Hiwassee, went to be with her Lord and Savior peacefully on March 1, 2024, with her family by her side. She was preceded in death by her parents William Murray Morton, Harriet Ann Hodder Morton, and her sister Carole Michael.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Dan McGuire; son and daughter-in-law, Josh and Kassie McGuire; daughter, Megan Parton; grandchildren, Matthew and Addyson McGuire, Wesley and Thea Parton; sisters, Harriet Caldwell (Samuel Caldwell), Ann Clayton (CG Clayton), and Marie Sharp (Bob Sharp); and brothers, Bill Morton and David Morton (Kim Morton).

Micki grew up in Charleston, West Virginia with six siblings before moving to Radford, Va. to attend Radford College and graduating in 1974. Micki majored in Health & Physical Education. She started her teaching career in Danville, Va. at George Washington High School. Later, she and her husband moved back to the area so her husband could finish his education at Virginia Tech. Micki was a substitute teacher for many of the schools within the New River Valley. Micki furthered her education when she graduated from Wytheville Community College as a Physical Therapist Assistant and later becoming a Certified Lymphedema Therapist, retiring from Carilion Home Health in 2019.

Micki was a person with many skills. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, refinishing antique furniture, baking cookies and pies, and carpentry work. Most of all, Micki enjoyed giving her time painting at the local churches or within people’s homes. She loved her church family. For over 50 years, Micki served her Lord in many ways as a camp counselor, Director of Children’s Ministry, teacher, and director of various types of programs. Micki was also an avid lover of the outdoors, enjoying hiking, camping, kayaking, and biking.

We would like to thank Carilion Hospice and Carilion Medical staff for the care Micki received. We would also like to thank Blue Ridge Cancer Center for their constant care over the past two years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a cancer project of your choice.

A celebration of life for friends and family will be held at Valley Bible Church at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2024.

The McGuire family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford, Virginia.
