Mary Frances (Thompson) Lester 80, was born on August 31, 1933. She was the daughter of Cecil Thompson who died in a restaurant fire when she was 4 years old. She cherished the few pictures she had of him. As a young girl she attended the one room school house in Alum Ridge, then attended the old Floyd High School. She worked many years as a nurse. She loved bluegrass music; especially Dr. Ralph Stanley and the Stanley Brothers.

She was preceded in death by her only child; Steve Lester who was a long term employee of the Town of Christiansburg. She spent the last years of her life in solitude at her longtime residence on Hickok Street in Christiansburg.

She passed from this life to be with her heavenly family on July 5th from multiple complications of Diabetes. She is survived by two very special friends that helped to care for her many needs in the last months of her life; Deborah Ashcraft and Garry Collins.

A memorial service in her honor will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at 7:00 pm at the Alleghany Baptist Church on Alleghany Street in Blacksburg, Virginia. The ceremony will be conducted by Pastor Altheus Atkins.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to The Christmas Store in Christiansburg, VA or to Meals on Wheels of Christiansburg, VA.

A special thanks to some very compassionate and understanding health care workers that rose above Mary’s very difficult challenges and treated her with the dignity she deserved at the end of her life, we remember.
