King, Kenneth Hale

Kenneth Hale King of Check Va. born January 21,1942, passed peacefully in the presence of his loving family on December 18, 2023, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital following a valiant 10 year battle with cancer.

Kenneth was the loving husband of Carolyn Conner King, and the proud father of Victoria, Kenneth and Joseph. He was raised on his 6th generation farm on Kings Store Road, maintaining the farm throughout his life. His professional career was spent in the concrete construction industry where he made his mark working on major highway and industrial projects throughout southwest Virginia. In 1974, Kenneth started his own company which expanded in 1981 to become King Concrete Company Inc. which included building a ready-mix concrete plant operation in Floyd County. His decades long service to the local area led to him being affectionately known as “The Concrete Man”.

Kenneth retired in 2007 following the sale of the ready-mix plant operation to his long-time colleague and friend James Bryant, owner of Stuart Concrete in Stuart Va. Kenneth helped numerous churches and community organizations with construction and expansion projects through the years and was a founding member of the Locust Grove Fire Department.

In retirement, he further embraced time on the farm, ensuring its vitality for the generations to come. His greatest dedication was to family, working and playing on the farm by day, and playing Rook at the kitchen table with his children and grandchildren way into the night.

He is preceded in death by his parents Lewis Brammer and Garnet Hale King. He is survived by his spouse: Carolyn Conner King; Children: Victoria King Davis (Joseph), Kenneth Hale King, Jr. (Kelly), Joseph Daniel King (Heather); eight grandchildren: Nicholas King Davis, Brittany Bennette, Caroline King Bushkar (Ryan), Kenneth Hale King, III, William Edward Monaghan King, Luke Mitchell Conner King, Trevor Lewis King, Caitlin King Howery (Adrian); five great grandchildren: Levi M.
