JOHNSON, Gladys Viola Robinson

Mrs. Gladys Viola Robinson Johnson, 89, of Narrows, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 16, 2006 at Riverview Nursing Home in Rich Creek.

Mrs. Johnson was born May 31, 1917 in Raven, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Joseph Howard and Dora Bell McGlothlin Robinson. In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Ovid Brooks Johnson; a brother, Marvin (Bud) Robinson; a sister, Dorothy Plaster; and a great-granddaughter, Emily Smith.

A graduate of Richlands High School, Gladys attended Emory & Henry College, and was graduated from Radford University and retired from Giles County Public Schools with 30 years service as a teacher at Narrows Elementary/Middle School. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Narrows.

She is survived by her children, Pat Johnson and wife, Ellene of Radford, Mike Johnson and wife, Joyce of Lynchburg, Harriet Archer and husband, Bill (Ike) Archer of Oakboro, North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Scott Johnson, Paige Herndon and husband, John, all of Radford, David Johnson and wife, Sheri, and Mark Johnson and wife, Sherry, all of Forest, Virginia, Phillip Johnson of Evington, Virginia, Beth Smith and husband, Mark of Norwood, North Carolina, Ammie and Brian Murdock of Holden Beach, North Carolina; seven great-grandchildren, Connor and Grayson Herndon of Radford, Corey Johnson of Forest, Duston and Hunter Johnson of Evington, Grayson Johnson of Forest, William (Will) and Kendall Smith of Norwood, North Carolina; a sister, Claudine Campbell; and sister-in-law, Rosalie Charlton, both of Narrows; several nephews, nieces and great-nephews and nieces.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Riverview Nursing Home and Dr. Kenneth Walker for the kindness, compassion, and care given to her during her time there.

Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Narrows with the Rev. Wayne Monroe officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Narrows. The family will receive friends at the church from 12 noon to 1 p.m. before the service.
