Hardison, Gene Cordell

Gene Cordell Hardison, 83, of Floyd and formerly of Roanoke, passed away Monday, January 15, 2007 at the VA Medical Center in Salem.

Born January 7,1924 in Schoolfield, Va. to Durham L. and Selma Yeatts Hardison, preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lloyd Hardison of Danville. Gene was a veteran of World War II, ’41 to ’45 and the Korean Conflict for a total of 13 years. He was a Sergeant in the 157th Engineers Combat Battalion. He also tested equipment in extreme temperatures. He had two honorable discharges.

During his enlistment he served in Japan, Korea, Europe and Germany. Among his medals he was awarded the European, African, Middle Eastern Croix de Guerre with Palm and Fourrag?re World War II Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars. After his time in service he ran a construction company in Roanoke, Cobblestone Builders. From his teenage years on, Gene loved playing golf, and was a member of Blue Hills Golf Club in Hollins until 2005.

Surviving are his wife, Nettie DeHart Hardison; daughter, Cynthia H. Moran; son, Richard Hardison, all of Floyd; stepdaughter, Darlene Cockram; and grandaughter, Teresa Belcher, both of Meadows of Dan; a sister, Iris H. Doss of Martinsville.

At his request, there will be no visitation, or funeral service. A private memorial service for the family will be held at Wood Funeral Home. Arrangements by Wood Funeral Home.
