Dowell, William Dewey
William Dewey Dowell, age 74 of Pulaski, died early Thursday morning, October 19, 2023 at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville. He was born in West Virginia on July 31, 1949, and was the son of the late Thelma Blankenship Dowell, and the late Thomas Spencer Dowell.
Bill was a United States Veteran having served in the Army, completing two tours in Vietnam, and spent the remainder of his enrollment in Germany. He was a graduate of the Pulaski High School class of 1968. He attended New River Community College receiving two associate degrees. For many years, Bill was owner/publisher of the local trade paper, “The Trading Post”.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Jo Ann Dowell Lindsay, and Mary Jane Dowell Blankenship, brother, Spencer Dowell.
He is survived by a step-son; Tony Thornton of Vinton, sister Mona Marie Dowell of Richlands, Va, and many nieces and nephews, along with special friends; Mary Barrett, Mark and Paula Smith and Charlie and Becky Smith.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, where military honors will be provided. Friends and family may greet each other briefly after the graveside service at the cemetery.
