Childress, Harry B. Jr.

Harry B. (Jack) Childress, Jr., 79, of Seven Lakes, N.C., formerly of Pulaski, passed from this life Wednesday, August 16, 2006 after a brief illness surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by his loving son, David Wayne Childress, and his parents, Harry B. Childress and Mary Poole Childress.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Betty Smith Childress; brother, Douglas Childress and his wife Linda of Barboursville, W.Va.; brothers-in-law, William W. Smith and wife Donna of Newport News, Va., Ralph E. Smith and wife Joyce of Scottsboro, Ala., Garnett E. Smith and his wife Patsy of Smith Mountain Lake, Va.; sister-in-law, Jeanne Smith of Dublin, Va.; 11 nieces and nephews; special and close friends, Robert Williams and Richie Eads of Johnson City, Tenn., Liz and Earl Surface of Seven Lakes, N.C.

Jack served in the United States Navy in World War II where he served on the Aircraft Carrier USS Fanshaw Bay. Jack grew up in Austinsville (Wythe County) Va. where he later served as a Deputy Sheriff for many years. He later served the Town of Pulaski as a police officer and later as Chief of Police. Jack had over 35 years of law enforcement. After retirement, Jack enjoyed so much serving the children of Snowville, Va. (Pulaski County) where he drove a school bus for several years. Jack and Betty June moved to Seven Lakes in 2001.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Pulaski, at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 19, 2006 with the Rev. Terrie Sternberg officiating. The family will receive friends Friday, August 18, 2006 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski.
