Black, James Calhoun

James Calhoun Black, affectionately known as Jimmy, was called to eternal rest, peacefully on Sunday, September 28, 2008, with his loving family by his side, and as the song “Blessed Assurance” was sung, Jimmy quietly and humbly obeyed the call of the Lord.

Born on October 29, 1947, he was the son of the late Mills Chesaday and Thelma Louise Black. Jimmy was loved and nurtured tirelessly by the family. After the passing of his mother, his father married Katherine Ladson Black and she continued the love and nurturing of Jimmy.

After the passing of his parents the love for and nurturing of Jimmy did not cease, his brother and sister-in-law, William and Alicia Black, and his sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Fred Calloway continued the excellent care he had always received. Jimmy was handicapped, but he did not let that hold him back. He loved to talk to people and help in any way that he could and serving as personal assistant to Mrs. Angie Pack, helping her around her home, was one way Jimmy helped those in his community.

Jimmy leaves to cherish his loving memories, six sisters and three brothers, Mary Frances Woods, Dollie Stoddard (Ralph), Hezekiah (Laura) Black, all of Cleveland, Ohio, Gretchen Robinson, of Washington, D.C., Evelyn (Fred) Calloway, of Roanoke, Va., Mary (Willie) Lyons, of Columbus, Ohio, Harvey Black, of Pulaski, Va., and William (Alicia) Black of Riner, Va.

Funeral services will be held noon on Saturday, October 4, 2008, at First Missionary Baptist Church, New River, Va., with the Rev. Ronald Brown Sr. officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time for services. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Penn’s Funeral Home.
