Barringer, Elsa Gudheim
Elsa Gudheim Barringer born Elsa Virginia Gudheim on January 16, 1911, in Blacksburg, Virginia, died on June 21, 2006. Ms. Barringer was the youngest of 4 children born to Harry Gudheim and Gunhild B. Gudheim. In addition to her parents, her husband, John M. Barringer, Jr.; brothers, Kurt Gudheim and Arnold Gudheim; and sister Carrie Spear preceded her in death.
A life long resident of Blacksburg, she was a significant presence in the lives of many. Ms. Barringer graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, one of the first groups of women to receive a degree from the university. An accomplished musician, she taught piano lessons for many years and performed for local dance recitals. She often lent her skills for events held by local charity organizations and was designated an honorary Lion.
She married John Martin Barringer, Jr. in 1937. The couple lived in Blacksburg with their three daughters. She loved to entertain, hosting many impromptu gathering where the participants danced, sang and provided their own music. In her later adult life, she spent much of her time with her grandchildren gardening and working at her property in Giles County. She loved the mountain views, the flowers, birds, and decorating the small house. Her grandchildren have fond memories of many hours spent on the porch visiting and enjoying the view. Ms. Barringer was an avid fan of Virginia Tech sports, following the football team and women’s and men’s basketball teams with fervor.
Mrs. Barringer is survived by her three daughters, Elsa Barringer Roop of Riner, Virginia, Margaret Barringer Young of Port Austin, Michigan, and Anne Barringer White of Worthing, England; seven grandchildren, Adrienne Turner of Hollis, Maine, Erin McKinnon, Robin King and Allyn Turner of Charleston, West Virginia, Hannah Harniess and Ben White of London, England, Duncan White of Worthing, England, great grandchildren, Jessica Parson, Thomas King and Isaac McKinnon of Charleston, West Virginia and Caleb Harniess of London, England; and great-greatgrandchildren, Caleb and Emma Turley of Charleston, West Virginia. She is also survived by her dedicated caregivers Betty Bland, Jeanny Carter, Louise Rogers and Ramona Shaver.
The family is planning a private memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations made to a favorite charity. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg.
