Spencer, Robert Earl

amem_flagRobert Earl Spencer of Blacksburg, Virginia, died on December 2, 2016. He is survived by his wife, Carole Thomas Spencer.

Other survivors are his very special friends, Isaac Holden, Floyd, Virginia, and Gail Hoback, Bent Mountain, Virginia. In addition, his survivors include brohter-in-law, Douglas E. (Ruth) Thomas, Chilhowie, Virginia; niece Kristina T. (Joseph) Mueller, Midlothian, Virginia; niece Diana T. (Geoff) Goodale, Richmond, Texas; and great nephew, Clive Emmett Goodale.

The family gives special thanks to his devoted caregivers, Christiana Lane, Frances Mullins and Frances Collins. A special thank you to the staff at Montgomery Regional Hospital for the excellent, compassionate care they provided for Mr. and Mrs. Spencer.

Mr. Spencer studied mathematics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He taught thirty five years in the Department of Mathematics at Va. Tech. Mr. Spencer was a First Lieutenant in the United States Army. He achieved the rank of Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League and was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. He was a member of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church. Mr. Spencer was a devoted fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Va. Tech Hokies.

In accordance with the wishes of the deceased, there will be no service. Donations in his memory may be made to the Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad 1300 Progress Street, Blacksburg, Va. 24060; or to the Robert Earl Spencer and Dr. Herbert Earl Spencer Endowed Mathematics Scholarship, Virginia Tech Foundation, 902 Prices Fork Rd., Blacksburg, Va. 24060.
