Cox, Martha Moore

In the early hours of Saturday, July 30, 2016, Martha Moore Cox went to be with our Lord. She was born November 22, 1928 and was the eldest daughter of seven children born to the late Shafter and Edna Chinault Moore in Pulaski.

She was a devout member of Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church and looked forward to spending Sundays with her church family. Before retiring, she was a faithful employee of Jefferson Mills in Pulaski.

Martha was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She joins in heaven, her husband of 66 years, William (Bill) Jefferson Cox; and her treasured daughter, Sherry Lee Golden; her beloved son-in-law, Luther A. Woods Jr.; and her special companion, “BJ”, her little buddy. She was also proceeded in death by her siblings, Shafter (Jr) Moore, James (Jack) Moore, Mary Jane Mabry Mason and Charlotte Ann Underwood.

Martha leaves two children, her daughter, Sylvia Cox Woods of Pulaski; and her son, William (Billy) Jefferson Cox of Pulaski; a son-in-law, Carl F. Golden of Pulaski; and her stepson, Robert “Bobby” Cox of Wytheville to cherish her memory. She is also survived by sisters, Eula Mae (Littlen) Jones of Dublin and Beulah Faye (Biggen) and Pat Patterson of Pulaski.She was “Granny Cox” to many. She leaves beloved memories to her grandchildren and their spouses, Rhonda and Mark Richardson of Pulaski, Lee Ann and Eric Martin of Dublin, La. and Jessie Woods of Pulaski, Amanda Woods and Phil Nelson of Henrico, Candy Cook of Pulaski, Brandy Meredith of Pulaski, Pam Hoback of Pulaski, Joey Hoback of Roanoke, Brian and Penny Golden of Dublin, Brad and Tracy Golden of Dublin and Brent and Wendy Golden of Dublin and Cindy Quesenberry of Pulaski. She also leaves behind 20 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces; and nephews; and an abundant church family.

Martha was a private and proud person. She was very devoted to her family and loved them dearly. She enjoyed cooking, spending time watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren play and grow. Many fond memories of holiday and Sunday family meals will comfort her children and grandchildren.She enjoyed walking, tending to her flower gardens, taking long rides with her husband, Bill into the mountains to watch for wildlife and reading her Bible. As with most women, “Marthie” enjoyed shopping whether it was for antiques or clothes. She also enjoyed searching and finding coordinating jewelry. A common site that could be seen would be Granddaddy Bill relaxing in the mall or outside of the grocery store while Granny dressed in her “Sundays Best” shopped.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to her sister, “Littlen” for her comfort, visits, love and genuine care for Martha. We would also like to thank her special neighbor and friend, Waxanna Trueheart for her kindness, visits and good food.

The family also wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the staff at Pulaski Health and Rehabilitation Center and also, the Rev. Mike Ingo.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday evening August 2, 2016 at 7 p.m. at the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church, with the Rev. Mike Ingo officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 5 until 7 p.m.. Burial will follow Wednesday morning August 3, 2016 at 10 a.m. in the South West VA. Veterans Cemetery, Dublin.

The family will receive friends at the home of granddaughter, Rhonda and Mark Richardson in Pulaski. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Martha Cox to “Taking It To The Streets Ministry” at PO Box 30, Pulaski, Virginia 24301. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski.
