Roy Woods, 87, of Radford, Va., formerly of Portsmouth, Va., passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2009. He was a Chief Gunner’s Mate in the United States Navy serving in both World War II, where he was a member of the Armed Guard, and the Korean War. After retiring from the military, he continued to serve the Navy as a weapons inspector at NAVSEACENLANT. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve, the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans.
He was born on June 7, 1922, in Viper, Ky., the son of the late John and Louann Walker Woods. Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Eleanor H. Woods, of Radford; four children and their spouses, Craig Woods, of Blacksburg, Kimberly and Kennon Yeck, of Mt. Jackson, Jeffery and Maria Woods, of Radford, and Duane and Beth Woods, of Lexington, N.C.; and five grandchildren, James, Jordan, Ellie, Jonathan and Sydney Woods.
A full military graveside service will be held at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, in Schuylerville, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Carilion Hospice Services of New River Valley, 707 Randolph St., Suite 251, Radford, Va. 24141.
