Stewart Davis, 98, of Narrows, took up new residence in Heaven on Saturday, May 23, 2009. He was born in Dickenson County, Virginia on October 6, 1910 and was the son of the late Marion and Nancy Jane Viers Davis.
In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Holiday and Mackado Davis and a sister, Dorothy Newberry.
Stewart and his loving wife of 74 years, Elva Willis Davis, were in business together, having operated a service station, restaurant, shoe shop, general store, post office, and a coal mining business in Dickenson County. In later years, Stewart took up carpentry, building furniture, homes, bridges, and picture frames for Elva’s artwork which has found its way to nearly every state in America and into many foreign countries.
Having celebrated their 74th anniversary this past Monday, May 18th, Stewart remarked, “Had I married a hundred times, I would have married Elva every time!”
In addition to his wife, Stewart is survived by two children, Jerry Davis and wife, Sue, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, and Sharon Turner and husband, Bob, of Christiansburg; six grandchildren, Sherri Balderson and husband, David, and Karen Hardy and husband, Randy, all of Mechanicsville, Kyla Erickson and husband, Paul, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Robbie Turner and wife, Susan, of Salem, Joseph Stewart Turner, of Pembroke, named in honor of his grandfather, and Amy Fisher and husband, Daniel, of Christiansburg; thirteen great-grandchildren, Andrea, Shannon and Rachael Hardy, Andrew, Heidi, Emily, Betsy, and Madeline Erickson, Jacob, Caleb, and Noah Turner, and Chase and Bryson Fisher; two sisters, Delphia Newberry and Stella Sykes; and a brother, Arthur Davis, all of Dickenson County, Virginia.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Riffe’s Funeral Service in Narrows with the Rev. Dennis Martin officiating. Entombment will follow in Birchlawn Abbey in Pearisburg.
