Alderman, Melvin S.

Melvin S. Alderman, 80, of Narrows, Va., passed away Monday, April 20, 2009, at Carilion Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. He was born in Willis, Va., on September 23, 1928, and was the son of the late Alseberry Leonard and Lissa Ellen Weddle Alderman.

In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Faye Raines Alderman; three brothers, Clarence, Fred, and Riner Alderman; and three sisters, Ila Hylton, Freeda Dobbins and Jocie Keith.

Mel was a United States Army veteran following World War II, and was an employee of Wolf Creek Motor Company, Valley Chevrolet, New River Lumber Company, and worked for many years as a rural mail carrier with the United States Postal Service. He loved to hunt and fish and was an avid golfer. He was a faithful member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Narrows where he served as a past chairman of the board, treasurer of the Christian Men’s Fellowship, Chancel Choir, Sunday School, and as financial secretary.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Alderman; a son, Sam Alderman and wife, Susan, of Salem; four stepchildren, Dennis Wade and wife, Brenda, of Pearisburg, Bobby Wade, of Floyd, Alisa Boothe and husband, Gary, of Floyd, and Debra Wade, of Christiansburg; several nieces, nephews and cousins, and many special friends.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2009, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Narrows with the Rev. Dennis Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery with Graveside Rites conducted by VFW Post #6000 of Narrows, American Legion Posts #68 of Narrows, #311 of Pembroke and #145 of Peterstown.
