Houchins, Anise Belle
Anise B. Houchins, 92, of Floyd, Va., was born May 31, 1916, in Floyd, Va., to the late Thomas Abe Houchins and Nannie Belle Thomas Houchins. She was the last survivor of 11 children. She died Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Skyline Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation in Floyd.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Beatrice Martin, Elsie Houchins, Minnie Houchins, Evelyn Houchins, Lynda West, Irene Houchins, and Ruby Houchins; and brothers, Albert, Cobra and Tyler Houchins.
Miss Houchins was a graduate of Radford College and a school teacher for 33 years. She started her teaching career in Indian Valley at Wahoo School with one room in 1934. She finished her career in Carroll County at Woodlawn Elementary School. Her pupils were a large part of her life and she could remember several stories about her experiences in school. She enjoyed fishing, hunting and working in her garden. She enjoyed her friends in the Pizarro Community and the time they spent sitting and talking. She was a member of Harvestwood Covenant Church and enjoyed her church family.
She is survived by a sister-inlaw, Juanita Houchins, of Floyd, Va.; nephews, Roger Houchins and Linda, of Ferrum, Roderick and Faye West, of Christiansburg, and Eugene West, of Floyd; and nieces, Sandra and Eugene Anglin, Nancy Faye and Sam Midkiff, both of Woolwine, and Alicia Houchins, of Christiansburg. She liked spending time with her cat, Foggy.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2009, from Wood Funeral Home with the Rev. Theo Van Blerk officiating. Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and other times at the home of Juanita Houchins, 2018 Franklin Pike. Flowers will be accepted or donations can be given to the charity of your choice. The family would like to thank her caregivers, Jackie Belle, Iva Dell Hollandsworth, and Skyline Manor.
