Weikel, Sr., John Edward

weikel_john_edward_srIt is with great sadness that the Weikel family of Dublin, announces the passing of John Edward Weikel, Sr. (May 12,1944 – May 28, 2015) John, lovingly known as Johnny by many, was the youngest of six children born to Oswald Lee Weikel and Nancy Strain Weikel of the Shenandoah Valley.

He is survived by his beloved children John Weikel Jr., Scott Weikel, Hope Weikel Shomaker, and Jennifer Woolwine; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his ever-loved former spouse, Elizabeth Weikel; and his sister, Mary Lou Martin.

Mindful of his origins and those preceding him in death, including his special friend and fiancé, Shirley Mabry, who also succumbed to cancer. John’s recent years were spent adoring his family and generously supporting their dreams and goals.

Dedicated to hard work and service to the economic strength of his country, John earned an enviable living as a coast to coast big-rig driver. He loved his open road work and was a proud member of the Teamsters for 32 years. Often known by his CB handle, “The Wolfman” John’s tough, yet big-hearted spirit won over friends wherever he traveled. Known for his straight-talk and keen sense of fairness, he formed close, lasting bonds that are appreciated to this day.

Throughout retirement, John and his devout partner, Shirley enjoyed motorcycle excursions across the byways of Virginia, beach front cruises along the Carolinas, and Bike Week camaraderie with life-long friends. He was an avid outdoorsman that enjoyed camping along the New River, animals of all sorts, and all the blessings of creation. Above all, John loved and enjoyed the abundant treasures of family and dear friends.

Per Mr. Weikel’s preference, no memorial service is scheduled, but friends are encouraged to make charitable contributions in his memory to causes supporting those fighting cancer, spinal injuries, multiple sclerosis, and American veterans everywhere.

The entire Weikel Family extends immeasurable gratitude to Dr. Brooks, the Chemotherapy crew, and everyone at Blue Ridge Cancer Care.
